We have been talking alot this week about the "self" and if you can really know who you are? Well thats a very tough question because we do change so much and anything could happen to change what we though to be ourselves. In a way I believe that you can only describe yourself as changing. Some people like to say well I know who I am and what I stand for. Such as people saying they have strong faith or say that they are optimistic. Well things could happen to them and change that really fast. Such as if ones husband died. They could lose the faith they have in God and turn away from him blaming him for what happened. Many examples could be given of this change. Just like we learn more about life as we get older so our perceptions change. And yes essentially you are the same person having had many experience but what if you did not have these experiences or different ones. Would you still be the same person?
I dont believe anyone truely knows themselves because soo much could happen to make what you thought of yourself to be untrue. Even though this is not a good way to describe yourself I have no doubt that anyone could describe themselves in a way but to say they are changing.

I totally agree with you shannon. We are always changing and there is no way to describe yourself when this is happening to you. When people try to describe themselves to you, they use many different words but is that really them?
Part of what's related to what Descartes says that is important for his view is that the mind is consistent through time (though not exactly his words). But according to what you say, the mind can change, things can happen to change it. Even if we are just minds, are we the same identity if we change? If not, what could this mean for Descartes? Would you still agree with what he says?
